Gustav Adolf Ast was born in Hamburg in 1905 and began training in 1923 at the Hansische Hochschule für bildende Künste (Hanseatic University of Fine Arts), Hamburg (today HFBK). He became a member of the Hamburg artist group "Niederelbe", founded in 1929, and the HKü. Between 1934 and 1946, he stayed in Finland several times. During the war years, he was friends with Gerda Börse. During the Nazi era, his works were considered degenerate; in 1943, several hundred works in his studio were destroyed by air raids. After the end of the war, he worked as a press illustrator and political writer for the Hamburger Echo and Hamburger Abendblatt. In 1969, he resettled in Neu-Ulm.
