Hermann Grom-Rottmayer studied from 1903 to 1906 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Alois Delug and from 1906 to 1908 at the Academy in Munich with Ludwig von Herterich. He traveled to Paris and Italy for study purposes. From 1910 to 1939 he was a member of the Vienna Secession. From 1916 to 1926 Grom-Rottmayer held a professorship at the art school for women and girls in Vienna and then at the Vienna Technical University for painting and drawing. In 1927 he founded a special school for stage staging and lighting at the Technical University. Grom-Rottmayer worked as a genre, landscape and nude painter as well as a lithographer and stage designer and wrote theoretical texts on painting ("Problems of Representation", 1929; "View and Representation", 1931).
